 Public radio: This is where radio is funded by the licence fee of which the general public pay and the government fund. This means that they cannot advertise or explicitly promote products on their stations. They also don't have competitions that offer cash prices. public radio have some of the highest listener numbers in the UK with approximately 14.9 million listeners tuning in every week. 

 

National commercial radio: The biggest difference between public and commercial is that commercial radio contains advertisements and endorsements. Major companies such as Global will have multiple stations under their ownership which will cater to all different types of audiences, like Kiss, Capital, Heart, etc. These stations rerun as a method in which they create a profit for the company through the uses of adverts and endorsements. 

 

Regional radio: This can be both public or commercial radio. Instead of being targeted at a national audience it is more aimed towards specific region like, radio Sheffield, etc. By focusing their radio station to a specific region they can tailor news and advertisements to the real that they are based in.

 

Not for profit radio: This radio is developed to make no profit and keep costs minimal. They rely on volunteers to make sure things can be kept running. They're mainly used in places such as, Hospitals, Universities and colleges. Los of big name Radio DJ's will have started their career in university radio. They tailor their content based around their service to inform and entertain them.

 

Community Radio: It's a form of not for profit radio. This is when local people produce and broadcast their own programs and participate in operating the station. It covers a small geographical area; usually around 5km. By having a small area of coverage they can cater for whole communities or for different areas of interest. They can be particular ethnic group, age group or interest group. Community radio stations reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests.

 

Internet Radio: The proper term for internet radio is webcasting. It is a form of streaming media where content is usually provided live instead of being prerecorded like some podcasts. The internet is another form of distribution for its content rather than radio waves. The key perk of internet radio is that it will be available on a global scale as it uses the internet to distribute and anyone with a device connected to web can accesses it.
